Fall Landscape Checklist for Sioux Falls Homeowners

Before putting the yard out of mind for winter, take a slow walk around your property. Look at the landscape beds, lawn edges, patio, and the routes you use every day. A short checklist can help separate ordinary cleanup from questions that deserve a closer look. For homeowners in Sioux Falls, Harrisburg, Tea, Lennox, and Brandon, this is also a useful time to photograph concerns and decide what to discuss with a landscape contractor.

Start with the beds and borders

Look for debris covering bed edges, plants crowded by fallen branches, and rock or mulch that has spilled onto walking areas. Make a note of bare areas and places where the border no longer looks tidy. Avoid treating every bed the same: the right cleanup depends on the plants, existing ground cover, and how you want the space to function.

If you use mulch, keep it away from tree trunks rather than piling it against the bark. University of Maryland Extension recommends a maximum mulch depth of three inches. Check the existing layer before adding more. A fresh-looking surface should not come at the expense of covering the base of a tree.

Check moisture instead of following a fixed schedule

Cooler days do not automatically mean your trees and shrubs need no water. University of Minnesota Extension notes that soil moisture, rainfall, soil type, and site conditions should guide watering. For established trees and shrubs, it recommends checking moisture six to nine inches below the surface in the root zone; cool, moist soil does not need additional watering.

New plantings need their own care plan. If shrubs were recently installed, follow the instructions for those plants rather than copying the schedule for an established tree or lawn. Ask about any uncertainty before changing your routine. Our landscaping service page explains the kinds of outdoor improvements we can discuss.

Walk the patio, steps, and retaining-wall edges

Look for uneven spots on frequently used paths, loose-looking pieces, and areas where water collects after rain. Take photos from both close up and farther away so the location is clear. These observations help explain a concern; they do not establish its cause or tell you whether a wall is structurally sound.

Before using a cleaner, pressure washer, or winter deicer, check the care instructions for your specific paving or wall material. Products and finishes differ. If something has changed, arrange an assessment rather than attempting to reposition wall blocks yourself. See our hardscaping services for patio, walkway, and retaining-wall project information.

Make a practical lawn and winter-access list

Record worn lawn areas and questions about ongoing lawn care. If you are considering sod installation, discuss site preparation, timing, and aftercare before assuming installation is the next step.

Finally, identify the entrances, steps, and paths you need to keep accessible. Put away movable objects that could be in the way, and discuss priority areas when requesting snow removal. Keep your list short: immediate concerns, maintenance questions, and improvements for later.
